How to use the Handsfree Power Rear Gate on the 2020 Outback

Shopping or loading up your trunk and you don’t have a spare hand to open the rear gate on your new 2020 Subaru Outback? No need to fret anymore! All new on select Premium models and standard on Limited, Touring and XT models, the Subaru Outback Handsfree Power Rear Gate is here to simplify your life! 

If you haven’t tried it yet, you will soon find yet another reason to love you Subaru!

First, let’s make sure you have this feature turned on. Below the driver’s side air vent closest to the door, there are a few buttons. Locate the button that shows the rear gate open in the image and says “OFF” underneath. (See Figure 1). Ensure this button is released. When release a thin gray line will show at the top of button. When pressed in, feature is turned off and the gray line is unable to be seen.

After ensuring you have the Handsfree Power Rear Gate feature turned on, turn your vehicle off and remove you Keyless Access Fob from the vehicle, keeping it on hand (or in pocket/purse for this feature!)
When approaching the trunk to use feature, place your hand/forearm or other solid object directly in front of the Subaru emblem in middle of trunk. (See Figure 2).

Hold arm/hand in front of Subaru emblem for 5 seconds or until you hear a dual beeps from the vehicle. Once this has been heard, promptly remove your hand from in front of the emblem and step back to allow trunk to open. NOTE: If you do not remove hand or step back, the trunk will not open even if beeps were heard. 

To close trunk press button located on underside of rear gate that shows the gate open. (see Figure 3)

To lock rear gate, all doors, as well as gas compartment, press button with lock symbol. The trunk will automatically start closing for you. (See Figure 4)
