STI releases special limited edition model: STI S209

Subaru Tecnica International, a subsidiary of Subaru Corporation, will have a special edition model released: the STI S209. The S209 will be available in two exterior colors: World Rally Blue paired with gray wheels and Crystal White Pearl paired with gold wheels.

The STI S209 will be the first-ever crafted S-line performance vehicle sold in the US, and it will be sold exclusively in the US. As an S-line product, the S209 encompasses upgrades in power, handling, aerodynamics and driver engagement. With only 209 vehicles to be produced, the S209 comes jam-packed with performance and styling upgrades which carry on the high-performance legacy of the 2000 S201 and 2018 S208, both which were exclusive to the Japanese domestic market.

The production of the S209 is inspired from STI’s highly known and champion model: the WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge racecar.  Nürburgring Challenge racecar won the SP3T class at the 2019 24 Hours of Nürburgring, marking the sixth time STI dominated the SP3T class in the hardcore endurance race. Taking notes from the Nürburgring Challenge racecar, the S209 will have a more aggressive look than previous STI models. Wider, bulging fenders allow space for wider front/rear tracks and all-new tires developed exclusively for the S209 by Dunlop®. The 265/35 Dunlop® SP Sport Maxx® GT600A summer-only tires wrapped around lightweight 19 x 9-inch forged BBS alloy wheels are a huge impact to the car’s lateral grip of over 1.0 g. Higher lateral grip helps handling corners and steering without loss of some control while higher longitudinal grip helps decrease wheel spin at takeoff or tires locking up during braking. The undercarriage of the S209 also holds upgrades which help handling to include Bilstein® dampers, stiffened coil springs, a rear stabilizer bar, pillow-type bushings, flexible front-strut tower bar and flexible front/rear draw stiffeners.

The S209 will feature Brembo brakes with upgraded high-friction pads for improved fade-resistance. To provide additional engine cooling, vents have been placed on front fenders while vents on the rear fenders are placed to help reduce drag and increase downforce.

Like the Nürburgring racecar, the S209 has front, rear and side under spoilers; front bumper canards; and carbon-fiber roof panel and rear wing. Each meticulous detail helps the S209 achieve better aerodynamics and power resulting in its 341-hp at 6,400 rpm produced by a re-done version of the EJ25 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine. This marks the most powerful STI yet with an increase of 31-hp from the 2019 model year WRX STI. The midrange torque also impresses at 330 lb.-ft at 3,600 rpm.

Notable design details include: the S209 serial number plate tastefully displayed on the center console as well as on the BOXER engine under the hood; S209 badging on the passenger-side dash, headrests of the Recaro® front bucket seats, to the exterior on the front grille and fenders and to the rear decklid; and a STI badge takes the place of the traditional Subaru star cluster on the D-shaped steering wheel.

All this beauty and power, craftfully designed with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission, will be enjoyed only from the driver’s seat of one of the limited edition, US exclusive Subaru STI S209s!
